Like most writers and artist, I spend much of my week alone
in my studio. But during the school year, I get to take a
break and teach art and music two afternoons a week to
rural and Navajo kids at Battlerock Charter School, located
deep in McElmo Canyon, a red rock canyon, where
Sundance Kid’s uncle, of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance
Kid lore, ran cattle and where his nephew and friends did a
bit of rustling, or so the legend says.
The red rock school has been in existence since the 1915
and a charter school since 1994 and is one of a few one
room schoolhouse still in operation in the state of Colorado.
